✦ Synopsis


We obtained images of [OI]6300 emission from Comet Austin (1990 \mathrm{~V}) using the Wisconsin dual-etalon Fabry-Perot/CCD imaging spectrometer at the McMath solar telescope on Kitt Peak. The field of view diameter on the sky was approximately (10 \cdot 5). The spectral resolution of (0.21 \AA) was sufficient to image cometary [OI]6300 emission uncontaminated by nearby (\mathrm{NH}{2}) and telluric [OI]6300 emissions. Using a Haser model for the photodissociation of (\mathrm{H}{2} \mathrm{O}) and (\mathrm{OH}) as sources of (\left.\mathrm{O}^{1}{ }^{1} \mathrm{D}\right)), we find that the (\mathrm{OH}) mean lifetime (\tau_{\mathrm{OH}}) at (1 \mathrm{AU}) is ((1.1 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{5} \mathrm{sec}). 1993 Acadenic Press, Inc.
