β¦ Synopsis
The wavenumbers and eigenmodes of an infinite cylindrical dissipative silencer of arbitrary cross-section are determined by using the null-field approach. This analytical technique provides an alternative to the numerical variational formulations used in the literature so far. The rate of convergence of the null-field approach is indeed very good for those cross-sections encountered in most practical applications, for instance the flat-oval cross-section of the typical dissipative automotive exhaust silencer. For more complicated geometries, complete determination of the eigenmodes may not be possible even though the wavenumbers can always be obtained. To show the applicability of the technique presented some numerical examples are given.

In this work, the acoustic transfer matrix for a cylindrical dissipative silencer of arbitrary cross-section and bulk-reacting lining is derived for the case of negligible mean #ow. The derivation is performed in a two-step procedure. First, the corresponding in"nite-lined duct is analyzed by separa
Dissipative vehicle exhaust silencers often have cross-sectional geometries that defy straightforward analytical solution of the acoustic eigenproblem; some kind of solution is, however, required as a part of the basis for computational silencer design methods. As a useful alternative to some of the
