Thermodynamic conditions for the formation of metastable phases from undercooled liquids have been examined in terms of relative nucleation rates. For the case of pure metals and stoichiometric compounds, the metastable phases tend to nucleate in preference to the stable phase as the undercooling increases. For the binary solid solution forming alloys, the most probable nucleus concentration is nau the equilibrium composition at the liquidus temperature for small undercoolings. The isoconcmtration nucleation becomes most probable by undercooling as low as Td3.
