Gd3+ is of particular value, also, in EPR studies, as it is the only Ln3+ ion which is readily observed at room temperature. It is used as a dopant in solid-state studies, and now as a probe of site symmetry or molecular motion in biomolecules.

This is a useful book for beginners in lanthanide work, although fairly expensive (it is produced by camera-copy of variable print quality).
