SUMVARY

The impact of short -term hospitalization on symptoms of psychopathology was examined in a study of 840 patients who had been rated on the BPRS by psychiatrists a t the time of admission and a t discharge. Although the group of patients improved significantly in all areas of symptomatology, those symptoms that characterized the group a t admission were still present at discharge. When the data were examined ward by ward, it was found that the patients on all hospital wards improved and that some wards were slightly more effective than others.
