Rifting occurred in peninsular India during Permian -Triassic Gondwana sedimentation. The rocks of the Paleozoic -Mesozoic Indian Gondwana Supergroup succeed the Mesoproterozoic Vindhyan sedimentary rocks and the Indian Precambrian shield unconformably, and are renowned for their coal resources. The
