✦ Synopsis

We have previously reported (Wolfe and Cleveland, '33) that there are cyclic histologic changes in the anterior hypopliysis of the female rat vhich may be correlated with the various phases of the oestral cycle. I n this study differential cell counts were made on the anterior pituitaries of forty rats. The average level of the eosinophiles was 32.5 per cent, that of the basophiles 4.7 per cent, and that of the chromophohes 62.8 per cent. However, analysis of the quantitative data on the individual rats revealed that the variation in the level of the eosinophiles and to a lesser extent in tho basophiles was fairly great, even when the cell counts on rats killed in the same phase of the cycle were compared. I n the anterior pituitaries of twenty-seven of the forty rats nsed the level of the eosinophiles was between 30 and 40 per cent. In two rats * '750,269 eells were counted.
