✦ Synopsis

Roadside measurements of the noise emitted by 218 vehicles in freely flowing traffic are reported. Both rural and urban situations were included. The results show that vehicles fall into two distinct classes--light and heavy vehicles. For each class, relationships between noise emission and vehicle speed are presented for (i) dBA levels and (ii) levels in eight octave bands from 63 tlz to 8000 Hz. Results are also reported of the relationship between dBA level and vehicle speed for the three types of vehicles within each class.
