✦ Synopsis
By means of measurements and theoretical considerations the use of an artificial head in the evaluation of the efficiency of ear muffs for attenuating weak shock waves was examined. Blank shots from a pistol were used for generating the impulsive sound. The results indicate that an artificial head can be used for an objective evaluation of ear protectors provided the artificial head has the appropriate properties. For ear muffs, no distinctive difference was found between attenuation values obtained objectively with high level impulsive sound and those obtained subjectively with low level continuous sound. The attenuation provided by ear muffs varied with the angle of sound incidence.
