โฆ Synopsis
The Nitrate Directive (91/676/EEC) aims to limit the pollution of waters by nitrates from agricultural sources. This Directive will affect farming practice throughout the EU, especially in regions with a high concentration of livestock production. As part of an appraisal of this policy, the work reported here seeks to establish those farms and those regions in the EU which will be affected by such a standard. Linkages with the 1992 reform of the Common Agricultural Policy will be made because options to apply animal manure may be limited at farms with a compulsory set-aside scheme. It is concluded that major adjustments are required on certain farms in certain regions to meet the standards of the Directive. The Directive will therefore have significant regional variations in its impact which may need to be taken into account in other areas of EU policy.
