β¦ Synopsis
Lew Joliffe's nights had become restless. Not that anything was wrong, really. In fact his life seemed to be without a hitch Π²Πβ his job at the law office held promise, Jo was happy with him and their best friends, Harry and Shirley, lived in the apartment next door. But perhaps things were going too smoothlyΠ²ΠΒ¦ something, like excitement, was missing. And then the night walks began.
At first Lew began the walks alone, venturing out on sleepless nights, finding a strange exhilaration roaming the dark, silent suburb. But when Shirley, Harry and Jo found out, they insisted on sharing the "anything is possible" excitement of walks in the wee hours. They began to invent harmless pranks Π²Πβ trespassing on the freeway so strangely empty of commuter traffic jams, dancing in the supermarket parking lot to twenty-four hour canned music. Quite unexpectedly they invite a chase with a petty and humorless cop.
Then the dangerous fun begins. The real fun. As the pranks grow wilder, and the dares get bigger, the escapes become narrower and narrower. Suddenly those television "cops-and-robbers" chases seem real, each breathtaking escape giving birth to even more outrageous adventures.
The Night People is a skillfully written, suspenseful, yet lighthearted novel.
