This is not the first pluralist society in history. Llut all carlicr pluralist societies destroyed themselves because no one took care o f tlic c o i ~i i ~~o i i good. They .ibounded in ~~iiri~iiiiiiitics but could not sustain n~rrrrrrrtrrity, let alone create it. If o u r iiiodern pluralist society is to escape the s u m k t e , the leaders of (111 institutions Lvill have t o Icarii to be /twdcrs b e p v d fhc rc~d/s. They will have t o Iearn that it is not enough for thcm to lead their own institutions-tIioiiRli that is the first rcquircnient. They \vill ,ilso 1i.n~ to learn to become leaders in the comiiiunity. In fiict thcy will have to learn to c-reate community. This is going way b c y n d \vhat \ve h a w becn discussing .IS zoiili/ rcspirrsibility. Social responsibility is usudly dc.fincii ;is doing I I O litiriii t o othcrs in thc pursuit o f one's own interest o r of one's own task. There is no preccdent in history for such civic responsibility among institutional Ic.idcrs. But there are. fortunately, s i p s thiit the leaders of o u r iiistitutions in .ill sector< .ire beginning to wake u p to the nced to becoiiie Ie&r\ b c y n d the \valls.
