The nature of the stannite ion, produced by the anodk dissolution of tin, in sodium hydroxide solutions was determined by emfmeasurements. The results are best expl&ed if the ion has the formula Sn(OH);. A new value for the standard potential of the reaction is proposed. Sn(OH); (aq) + 2e = Sn (s) + 30H-(as); EPs6 = 0.88OV
