β¦ Synopsis
In a comment concerning the nomenclature of sandstones at Billinge Beacon in Lancashire, Chisholm (1988) has argued that these sandstones should be referred to the Crutchman Sandstone because they occur just below the horizon of the Pasture Coal. However there is some uncertainty in the Billinge Beacon area about the location of this horizon and until this uncertainty is resolved the correlation of the Billinge Beacon sandstones must remain in doubt. They may all belong to the Crutchman Sandstone (the choice of the Geological Survey), or to the Dyneley Knoll Flags, or may represent a combination of both the Crutchman Sandstone and Dyneley Knoll Flags. Broadhurst (1987) suggests that the topmost beds be called the Dyneley Knoll Flags in order to call to them the attention of sedimentologists in the light of Fielding's (1987) work on these rocks.
