✦ Synopsis
The absorption spectrum of a h@-pressure sodmm drscharge has been measured between 450 and 850 nm_ The experimental spectrum is in good agreement with a spectrum calculated using quasi-static hne-broadenmg theory III conjunction with ab mrtio computations of Na2 potenrral curves The good ngrecment confirms the ab initio "z& and 3~g potential curve5 Absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy have yielded a wealth of information on the lowest few singlet states XIX;, A'ZZ and B'II, of the alkali dimers. Far less information is available on the triplet states, mainly because under most experimental conditions the population of the repulsive triplet ground state 3Zi is neghgible compared to that of the slngIet ground state X ' _'i_ Recently, however, there has been a great deal of experimental and theoretical work on the triplet states [l-9]. Among the motivations for this work is the possibility of excimer lasing [9] and the need for a better understanding of the spectrum of high-pressure discharge lamps [lo] _ A further stimulus is provided by recent ab initio calcu-Iations of Liz and Na, potential curves by Konowalow. Rosenkrantz and Olson (KRO) [7] ; these calculations are claimed to be among the most accurate available
