โœฆ Synopsis

The Na D 1 line emitted from a nitrogen afterglow with Na vapor shows Doppler temperatures near 1600"K, considerably greater th:rn the translational temperature of the ambient gas. It is thought that this is due to translational heating of Na which is excited on collision with vibrationally cscitcd N2. The effect of the small measured self-absorption of the D 1 line is examined.
