✦ Synopsis


The trigonal planar high-spin ferric compound, Fe[N(SiMe a 2 a, exhibits a very large temperature-independent 1 I quadrapole splitting & e2 Qq = 6.12 mm see-') in its 57Fe Miissbauer spectrum between I.5 and 300°K. At low temperatures a novel type of magnetic hyperfme spectrum is observed. The (fluctuating) effective magnefic field is parallel fo the electric field gradient axis* and its value at 1.5°K is 175 kG. The line broadening and decreased field found on warming to 42°K shows that the 6A1 state is split by a trigonal &and field with D/k = -ioK.
