Abstract
Striated cloud heads are associated with some of the most extreme cases of rapid cyclogenesis. Animations of two clear examples are presented and one is interpreted in detail in the light of a Limited Area Model analysis. Six alternative dynamical explanations are considered but none satisfactorily fits all the evidence. Copyright ยฉ 2000 Royal Meteorological Society.
