those of a tuning fork. The ears in some way perceive a difference between sound wave and another of the same pitch which is ahead or behind the first in its cycle of motion. This ability to notice phase difference ceases when the frequency of the sound is from ~2oo to I5oo double vibrations per second. T,he Most Powerful Gas Engine in the World. (La Nature, June ~9, I92O.)--This distinction is claimed for an engine made by the Cockerill Society in Liege, Belgium. In August, t914, it was in process of erection. The Germans after the capture of the city allowed it to be put into operation and, when they were assured of its success, took it from its owners a~d sent it into Germany, to Duisburg. where it was running at the time of the Armistice. It was then sent back to Liege, where it was installed for the second time, with the addition of some improvements. It develops 800o horsepower. T'he cylinders, four in number, are 1.3 m. in diameter, 1.5 m. stroke, 94 r.p.m. The heat of the gases coming from the engine is used to generate steam for a turbine. G. F. S.
