โฆ Synopsis
In processes where mass flows have to be mlxed, and the formatlon of new phases has to be prevented, It IS essential for the composlhon and enthalpy (J/kg) to be so adJusted to each other that, whatever the mlxmg ratlo, the ultimate mixture will consist of one single phase under physical equlhbrlum conditions (temperature and pressure)
The requirements Imposed on the composltlon and enthalpy wdl be called the mrxmg crlterzon The mixing cnterlon plays an Important role m techmcal crystalhzatlon processes mvolvmg mixing-frequently under adlabatlc conchtlons-of hquld flows dlffermg m temperature and/or concentration For a binary system and a ternary one, both contammg one component that can be crystallized, the authors determmed the condltlons under which supersaturatlon and its consequences (scaling and undesired nucleation) can be avoided durmg adiabatic mixmg of the feed and the mother hquor m a draft-tube baffled (D T B )-crystalhzer
The correctness of the theory IS confirmed by the results of runs conducted with a ternary system m a 100 I experimental crystallizer, compliance with the mlxmg criterion proved to prevent scaling, and to increase the average crystal Size by a factor of 3 5
