✦ Synopsis

The pure rotational spectrum of the SO radical in the b 'Z+ metastable electronic state was observed by microwave spectroscopy in a dc-glow discharge plasma of a gaseous mixture of HIS, 02, and He. Intensities of the b 'Z+ state lines were about f of those of the a 'A state lines. The spectral lines with vibrational quantum numbers, v, up to 8 were observed, indicating that the SO radical is highly excited in vibration. The spectral lines of %O were also observed for u=O and 1 in natural abundance. Precise Dunham coefficients were determined from the observed frequencies.
