✦ Synopsis
The melting of metal spheres is considered, due to a spatially uniform radiant heat flux at their surface and under conditions where the gravity induced flow of the melt approaches total ablation.
The problem is formulated and the numerical solution of the differential equations was found to be in good agreement with experimental data obtained for lead and tin spheres.
A discussion is presented on the validity of the total ablation asymptote and on the applicability of a simpler, lumped parameter approach.
