โฆ Synopsis
Computer simulation of the product rates and quantum yields has been made to test the feasibility of mechanism alternatives for N2 and N20 formation in the photooxidation of NHs. It is concluded that the older Gesser mechanism for nitrogen formation is still consistent with ah of the available kinetic information on this system: NH3 + hv + NH* + H; NH1 + 02 + NO + HaO; NH2 + NO 4 N2 + H20. The recent alternative mechanism of Jayanty, Simonaitis, and Heicklcn may occur, but this remains unproven. Experiments are suggested which will allow a more definitive

A mechanism for the formation in a chain of H,, CO, and HCOOH in the photooxidation of formaldehyde is proposed. This mechanism is initiated by the addition of HO, to formaldehyde. Hydrogen atoms are produced by the thermal dissociation of the HOCH,O radical: HOCH,O -+ H + HCOOH; AH = + 3.2 kcal/mol
