โœฆ Synopsis

Matrix fracture-in brittle-matrix fiber composites is analyzed for composites that exhibit multiple matrix cracking prior to fiber failure and have purefy frictional bonding bctwecn the fibers and matrix. The stress for matrix cracking is evaluated using a stress intensity approach, in which the influcncc of the fibers that bridge the matrix crack is represented by closure tractions at the crack surfaces. Long and short cracks arc di~ing~shed. Long cracks approach a steady-state ~nfi~~tion, for which the stress intensity anaIysis and a previous energy balance analysis arc shown to predict idcntica1 dcpendenoe of matrix cracking stress on material properties. A numerical solution and an approximate analytical solution are obtained for smaller cracks and used to estimate the range of crack sizes over which the steady-state solution applies. Almtract-A new model for composite fracture termed the fiber bridging model is introduced. In light of the proposed fiber bridging model, an expression for the stress intensity factor for brittle matrix composites is derived. Through this method, the strengthening ability of the fibers, which is mai
