โœฆ Synopsis

An apparatus for measuring the specific heat of solids from 2 to 300 K is described. The equipment uses two cells, one of which contains the sample, the other being equal in mass to the addenda around the sample. They are surrounded by a screen; the temperature of which is raised at a constant rate. The difference in power required for each cell to follow the screen temperature is proportional to the thermal capacity of the sample and the rate of rise of temperature. Together with a description of the apparatus, an account is given of its setting up and of the errors of measurement. Results for a sample of copper are compared with standard values and some preliminary results of measurements on a uranium compound are given.

The velocity of longitudinally and transversely polarized 10 MHz sound waves has been measured in four technical polymers (nylon, Teflon, and two epoxy resins) between 4 and 100 K. The values of the specific heat divided by T 3 calculated from these measurements is considerably less than the values
