PREHISTORY 'MIND DOC STORM: HE WANTS OLD FOLK FOR TESTS'
Thus screamed the headlines of a national tabloid newspaper (albeit on page 15) in late 1979. Raymond Levy had been planning to embark on a randomized controlled trial of the effects of high-dose lecithin in patients with Alzheimer's disease. He had asked the local council permission to approach the clients of their residential homes. Councillors had opposed the application on the grounds that any experimentation on 'their' old people posed an unacceptable risk. Another newspaper reported that Dr Levy was:
. . . very angry indeed because I feel my research, which had barely got off the ground, may be seriously damaged.
