✦ Synopsis
This book is based on the proceedings of a conference organised by the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications, held at the University of Manchester in September 1974. It provides a comprehensive review of recent developments in numerical fluid mechanics as applied to aerodynamics and contains accounts of many new methods and ideas.
Aircraft aerodynamics provides an excellent example of the impact of modern numerical methods upon applied mathematics, methods assisted by the availability of fast digital computers. After an historical introduction to the applications and the relevant areas of numerical analysis, the book goes on to examine the computational problems associated with the theoretical predictions of fluid flows, including those problems which are as yet unsolved. Both survey and research papers are presented, covering subsonic, transonic and supersonic flow and boundary layers with examples showing the success of modern numerical work by comparison with actual experiments.
The editors feel that the book will be readily comprehensible both to those involved with aeronautical fluid flow problems and to mathematicians working on numerical solutions to partial differential equations. Thus it will be most valuable to aerodynamicists, engineers, numerical analysis and computer scientists interested in fluid mechanics.
