he soaring demand for 4-inch wafers was fuelled by the conversion from 3-inch to 4-inch manufacturing at GigaBit Logic, TriQuint and Vitesse, initiated in 1989, and also by the new 4-inch tab line at Cray Computer. Most vendors did not anticipate such rapid growth in this sector and were unprepared. Wacker (Germany) was the quickest to capitalise on the situation, capturing a very significant lead in the 4inch wafer market, helping to establish themselves as the leading S1 LEC wafer supplier of 1990 (Figure 1).
