Hardy went into the sitting room and found the Major there, standing by the window looking out, his thin shoulders heaving with the weight of his grief. There seemed nothing to say. Hardy’s very presence told him everything. Hardy stood in the doorway and wondered what to do next.
‘How?’
Hardy cleared his throat, and said softly, ‘I’m afraid it appears she was hit over the head.’
Medhurst nodded. After a pause he said, ‘These little hats the girls all wear nowadays, no protection.’
‘No indeed,’ Hardy replied, belatedly remembering to remove his own hat. He took a seat. The chessboard had been set up again, a match was already in progress. No doubt a new game had been started after he had taken his leave the previous evening.
‘When can I see her?’ Hardy was startled when Major Medhurst spoke suddenly right beside him. Tears ran unchecked down the man’s face. He was wringing his hands, his fingers restless and trembling.
‘Not today,’ Hardy said.

I mainly write in the mystery/crime genre but I also enjoy dabbling in fantasy fiction. I'm married with two grown up children and now live in Derbyshire, England, where Jane Austen's Mr Darcy came from. I divide my time between taking pictures of my cats and writing. When not plotting how to kill people (for the books, of course!) I can often be found trawling the aisles of my local grocery stores in pursuit of everyday items with lethal potential. Other interests include literary studies, history, cats, cooking, gardening, family tree research and chatting on Facebook. I self-published my first book, Criss Cross, book one of the Friendship can be Murder trilogy, in 2013 and the follow-up, Cross Check in 2014. The third book of the Friendship can be Murder trilogy, Check Mate, appeared in February 2016. The Dottie Manderson mystery series are set in Britain in the 1930s. Dottie is a young woman with a nose for trouble and an enquiring mind. Book three, a novella called Scotch Mist, is due out in the late spring/early summer of 2018, then book four, a full-length novel, called The Last Perfect Summer of Richard Dawlish, will appear in the autumn/winter of 2018.
