The Maker, the Teacher, and the Monster starts five years after the events of The Clockwork Fairy Kingdom.

The Maker, Nora, has taught herself what she could about magic and making. However, no teacher has ever shown up. The fairies from the clockwork kingdom still visit Dale on an annual basis, asking him to work with them.

This year, Cornelius, the head of the fairies, brings news: The dwarf Kostya has returned.
