โฆ Synopsis
A C measurements at 21 Hz of the magnetic susceptibility of powdered cerium magnesium nitrate between 4.2 and 1.1 K are reported together with the dependence of this susceptibility on the magnitude of the measuring magnetic field. It is found that, below 2 K, there is an appreciable field dependence, and observable departures from Curie's law occur if measuring fields greater than 3 0 rms are used: this result is o[ particular relevance in magnetic thermometry. The authors attribute this field dependence to a spin-lattice relaxation effect and they give a theory for the field dependence of the magnetic susceptibility in which account is taken both of the various orientations of the individual crystallites forming the sample and also of the ]:act that, in ac measurements, the Fourier component of M/H at the measuring ]:requeney is detected rather than the differential susceptibility aM/0H.
