COD gauge is described which permits the continuous determination of the apparent rotation axis and the true COD (at the very tip of the crack) during notched-bar bend testing. It is found that the neglect of the shift of this axis introduces an error in the critical COD measured at fracture (8,) which becomes increasingly important at small values of 6,. Suggestions are made as to how to overcome this problem.
