✦ Synopsis

Screening of the complete genome sequence from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has enabled us to compile a complete list of the genes encoding cytoplasmic ribosomal proteins in this organism.

Putative ribosomal protein genes were selected primarily on the basis of the sequence similarity of their products with ribosomal proteins from other eukaryotic organisms, in particular the rat. These genes were subsequently screened for typical yeast rp-gene characteristics, viz. (1) a high codon adaptation index; (2) their promoter structure and (3) their responses to changes in growth conditions.

The yeast genome appears to carry 78 different genes, of which 59 are duplicated, encoding 32 different small-subunit and 46 large-subunit proteins. A new nomenclature for these ribosomal proteins is proposed. 1998

Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used in a comparative study of ribosomal proteins from various strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The results demonstrated a case of dimorphism of L8 protein of 60S ribosomal subunit. Of eight strains examined, two strains were one type and six were the othe

A spontaneous high-level cycloheximide-resistant mutant of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae (strain cy32) is found to have an altered protein of the large subunit (60S) of cytoplasmic ribosomes, namely protein L29. The resistance character segregates together with this biochemical defect and is se

The amino-acid compositions of the mitochondrial ribosomal subunits of Saccharomyces cerevisiae have been determined and compared to those of cytoplasmic ribosomal subunits. For the large subunits, the mitochondrial and cytoplasmic ribosomes showed major differences in the proportions of arginine, a
