Elizabeth had been shocked by Mr Darcyโs proposal. She had always believed he disliked her as much as she despised him. She is even more astonished when he hands her a letter the next day, defending himself against the charges she hurled at him. But when her inquisitive cousin, Mr Collins comes upon her reading it, she hastily puts the letter away and fails to notice it fall to the ground.
Darcy is devastated when Elizabeth rejects his proposal. He is resolved on leaving Kent immediately that he might never see her again until his cousin, Colonel Fitzwilliam comes to him with a certain letter he had discovered in a servantโs possession.
Rumours fly throughout Kent and everyone knows this unmarried couple have been communicating in secret. But when Darcy offers to save Elizabethโs reputation, she rejects him once more. Only when the gossip threatens her beloved sisterโs future is she forced to relent and accept a man she does not love.
