✦ Synopsis

It presents a fascinating history of the development during various periods of time in antiquity covering all the countries that the river connects. The publication is ably edited by an Editorial Board comprising 7 members with 2 Editors-in-Chief. Perhaps this is the first publication describing developments in the riparian countries collectively.

It narrates the history of development of the basin in Germany, substantiated by case studies. The Austrian description gives a number of case studies and describes achievements in erstwhile Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Yugoslavia, Romania and Bulgaria interspersed with a good number of diagrams/pictures depicting the earlier as well as recent developments. Readers will be appreciative of the manner in which the measures have evolved to transform the valley into a region that we find today, the river serving as a valued water-transport system in Europe.

This book presents a chronological description of the history, art, science and technique of irrigation, drainage and flood management in the riparian countries of the Danube river, viz. Austria, Germany, former Czechoslovakia, Hungary, former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and Romania, from olden times to the period up to 1980.
