In his final year of military school, 20-year-old Aibek is forced to abandon his studies. Stunned by the revelation that his parents are dead, Aibek leaves his home in the city to return to Nivaka, the forest village of his birth. Now that the villagers have freed themselves from the invaders that killed their beloved mayor, they summon Aibek to take his father’s place. Certain that Helak, the overlord responsible for the initial invasion, will return and attempt to reestablish control of the village, Aibek races to teach the untrained villagers how to defend themselves from the advancing army.
