Unexpectedly called back to duty after two months fruitlessly shadowing Polish crime kingpin Jan Baltazar, DI Buchan has no idea what will be waiting for him. Nevertheless, the small-time gangland murder that is reported on his first morning back reveals there's trouble in store.
When another officer from the Serious Crime Unit is murdered the following day, Buchan and his team see Baltazar's dark shadow all over the death. However, everywhere he turns, it seems Baltazar has already been. Everyone he speaks to, Baltazar has already compromised.
