T h e r e are many mystical and mysterious surprises in Kyoto, Japan, the site of the recently held 8th International Congress on Neuromuscular Diseases (NM8). This meeting was scientifically exciting and shrouded by the usual Japanese expansive hospitality. The organizers are to be congratulated. The exponential rise and relevance of molecular biology and molecular genetics to neuromuscular disorders were highlighted. '[hey mrely open new doors to future therapeutic strategies, not least of all the reality of gene therapy. One can predict that the next Congress will endorse this view.

In the meantime we are pleased to publish nine abstracts presented in Kyoto under the title of the "Surprise Box." They all deal with molecular genetic and biological aspects of muscle disease. The first four relate directly or indirectly to the molecular biology of channel abnormalities. The next five have as their basis genetic linkage studies.
