This study treats a spur gear tooth as a variable cross-section Timoshenko beam to construct a dynamic model, being able to obtain transient response for spur gears of involute pro"les. The dynamic responses of a single tooth and a gear pair are investigated. Firstly, polynomials are used to represe

โฆ Synopsis
The authors have proposed modification (crowning) of geometry of spur gears and investigated the contact pattern and the transmission errors to recommend the appropriate amount of crowning. Based on the investigation, dynamic load of the crowned spur gear drive has been calculated which is helpful to predict the life of the designed gear drive. Computer programs for simulation of meshing and dynamics of the crowned spur gears have been developed. The developed theory is illustrated with numerical examples.

An asymmetric spur gear drive is considered. The asymmetry means that larger and smaller pressure angles are applied for the driving and coast sides, respectively. The conventional design of such a drive is based on application of involute proยฎles. The authors propose a modiยฎed geometry of an asymme
