W e e x a m i n e in detail E d w a r d K e r n e r ' s m e t h o d for linearizing t h e equations of e n z y m e kinetics. Our m a i n result is t h e d e t e r m i n a t i o n of canonical f o r m s for s y s t e m s which c a n b e linearized b y t h e m e t h o d . This is done b o t h in general a n d in t h e special cases of two a n d t h r e e dimensions where complete results are obtained.

T h e practical p r o b l e m of identifying linearizable s y s t e m s is also considered a n d comp u t a b l e necessary criteria are presented.
