Sakurai was involved with two cases of lysosomal storage diseases (LSDs). One of the patients had GM1 gangliosidosis, and the other had neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. It was working on these enzyme deficiency cases that first triggered Dr Sakurai's interest in treatments for LSDs.
