✦ Synopsis

With the goal of developing hematopoietic stem cell based gene therapy. He became interested in lentiviral vectors as a means of genetically modifying hematopoietic stem cells. Using lentiviral vectors originally developed by Professor Didier Trono, Dr Woods and collaborators demonstrated the efficiency of lentiviral vector transduction of human hematopoietic progenitor and stem cells as assessed following stem cell transplantation in immune compromised mice.

Other areas of interest during these studies were the analysis of transgene expression in lentiviral vector transduced murine embryonic stem cells differentiated in vitro to hematopoietic cells. These studies have advanced lentiviral vectors as a tool for the treatment of hematological disorders. Dr Woods completed his Ph.D. studies in October of 2002. He now plans to pursue postdoctoral training at the Salk Institute, La Jolla, under the direction of Professor Inder Verma.
