โฆ Synopsis
The 2001 Meeting of the European Society of Gene Therapy was held in Antalya, Turkey from 2 to 4 November. Many innovative approaches were presented during the meeting, amongst which was this year's award-winning presentation by Dr Shira Perl on the transdifferentiation of liver into panreatic islets as a potential approach to the gene therapy of diabetes. The award was presented by the ESGT President, Professor Bernd Ga ยจnsbacher.
At 31, Dr Shira Perl is the youngest of the young investigators to have received the award since its inception in 1999. Born in Israel, Dr Perl holds dual Israeli-US citizenship. She graduated from the medical school at Ben-
