✦ Synopsis

The JEZ celebrates its one hundredth anniversary this year commencing with Volume 301. The JEZ is a venerable yet lively publication, changing with the times and attracting new submitters and readers. As part of our centennial celebration, we will profile some of the significant and interesting articles published over the past one hundred years. Individuals close to the subject matter described in the original papers will prepare the profiles. The reviewers will present the gist of the work, give their view of its significance, and how it relates to the state of science today.

Approximately 15 articles, so-called ''JEZ Gems,'' have been selected, and these will appear in random order throughout the anniversary year. The articles themselves will not be reproduced in their entirety (some of the early papers run to over one hundred pages!), but selected segments and figures will be incorporated into the profiles. The articles will be posted on the web in their entirety. Thomas Pollard, Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology, New Haven, CT will lead off in this issue with a profile of papers submitted by Ray Rappaport, describing his classical experiments leading to an understanding of the mechanisms of cell division.

The JEZ continues to change. In recent years we have subdivided the Journal into two parts that are published under separate covers. Part A contains articles whose subject matter is consistent with the original policy of the JEZ to publish articles providing insight into biological questions through experimentation. In keeping with new and old outlooks, Part A is entitled Comparative Experimental Biology. Part B, under the editorship of Gu Β¨nter Wagner, Department of Ecology and Evolution, Yale University, New Haven, CT, is entitled Molecular and Developmental Evolution. The new section B combines both the experimental approach together with the biomathematical analysis of informational databases that together contribute to our understanding of the process of Evolution in both Molecular and Developmental
