✦ Synopsis

expression for determining J from the load displacement record of SEN specimen is given. The result is compared with other analytical expressions and with FE calculations. A correction for crack growth similar to the one given in ASTM standard ES13 is introduced. The applied tearing modulus is given both "exactly" and for an ideally plastic material. Finally J is evaluated in terms of failure curves in a failure-assessment diagram to show that there is no systematical difference between different bending-tension combinations.

SUMMARY 749

The problem of determining J from a load-displacement record of a SEN specimen under combined tension and bending was considered.

An upper-bound solution J which fitted finite-element solutions quite well was given.

The solution was extended to growing cracks, and an expression similar to the one in the ASTM standard ES13 was also given.

An "exact" expression for the applied tearing modulus was determined. J was evaluated in terms of the failure-assessment diagram which showed no systematical difference between different bending-tension combinations.

## Abstract For a ferritic construction steel similar to St37‐2 the cross section of three‐point bend type specimens was selected to be B : w = 1 : 2 and 1 : 1 (B: thickness, w: specimen width, and w = 25 mm was kept constant). For these two geometries the onset of stable crack growth J~0~ was foun
