Abstract
A simple semi‐theoretical treatment shows that the relation χ~T~γ^3/2^ = k between isothermal compressibility (χ~T~) and surface tension (γ) implies that the isothermal compressibility of a non‐polar liquid is determined by its structure and average intermolecular distance, and by the electron polarizability of the molecules of which the liquid is composed. The temperature‐dependency of isothermal compressibility of non‐polar liquids composed of quasi‐spherical molecules may be attributed solely to the corresponding temperature‐dependency of the average intermolecular distance in such liquids.
