Abstract

Some of the present evidence for the structure of the celluiose elementary fibril may be attributed to artifacts. The factors involved in the production of these artifacts may include the phenomenon of phase image granularity, the thickness of the ultrathin section, the structure of the negative stain, and the nature of the substrate. Interpretation of high resolution electron micrographs requires an intimate knowledge of these factors.
