✦ Synopsis

In 1985, our Editor-in-Chief, Professor Oscar Contreras Ortiz, conceived the idea of a separate scientific periodical to encompass the very new field of Urogynecology. At that time, the field was actually not new to him, since his father, who was Professor in the University of Buenos Aires, had established the field in Argentina in the 1960s, and had encouraged him to do multichannel urodynamics by the late 1960s. The idea of a new journal was presented to the American Urogynecologic Society's Board of Directors and the association with that society was thus established. The International Urogynecology Association was the first to accept this journal as its official publication from its conception. The second society to name this journal as its official publication was the Mexican Urogynecology Society which holds annual, very well attended, meetings in various parts of Mexico.

During 1989, negotiations began with Springer-Verlag London Ltd. to become its publisher and Volume 1 Number 1 was published in 1990 as a quarterly publication with Michael Jackson as the publisher's representative. Over the last four years the editorial staff have reviewed over 340 manuscripts submitted for publication. These manuscripts have included review articles, original scientific research, case presentations, special contributions, basic science manuscripts and letters to the Editor.

As the number of manuscripts and interest in the journal grew, it became obvious to the editors and Springer-Verlag London that an increased number of editorial pages was necessary. This was accomplished at the beginning of this year with the inauguration of bi-monthly publication. At about this time Michael Jackson left Springer-Verlag London and in mid-1993 his untimely death touched all of us who had worked with him. He was replaced by the very able Dr Gerald Graham, Medical Adviser, Springer-Verlag London, now having responsibility for this journal. Ms Marion Morrow is the Journal Production Manager, and the Production Controller is Ms Christiane Notarmarco who does a superb job of handling the every-day details of the administration and scheduling of all aspects of the journal's activities. It is indeed a pleasure to work with her. Due to the efforts of all these individuals we are now indexed in Excerpta Medica and are hopeful that Index Medicus will see fit to include this journal in the near future.

What about the future? It is obvious that the journal has filled a need in medicine as judged from its wide acceptance in the medical community in general and the urogynecologic community in particular. Manuscripts arrive on this Editor's desk with amazing frequency and certainly will continue to do so in the years to come. The quality of manuscripts remains high, and indeed is improving, as is the scientific basis of our subspecialty. Herein we have the opportunity to report our investigations to our peers. This not only enlarges the body of scientific knowledge in this field, but also serves as a
