โฆ Synopsis
Using paramagnetic resonance technique the interaction of oxygen with free spin centers in carbon was studied. Experiments were performed in which an increase in spin absorption intensity was observed at room temperature in carbonized sugar (1000ยฐC) after admission of oxygen. It was ascertained that this increase is real and not due to a change in line shape or saturation effect. Strongly adsorbed oxygen seems to be responsible for this effect since the increase is reversible; outgassing the sample at 700ยฐC bringing back the line intensity to the original value. The increase in intensity is roughly proportional to the initial spin concentration. A number of various experiments was carried out to clarify the nature of this new oxygen effect.
