Srlrnite and selenate a t submicrogrnm levels were added to suspensions of two lake sediments (Buffalo Pound and Katepwvs Lakes) from southemtern Saskatchewan, Canada. The sedimcnt front Bnffalo Pound Ltxke rapidly oxidized sc1cnit.e in an Arrhenius type react.ion and followed first order kinetics. The sediment from Kntepwa Lake oxidized sclenite, hut a t a much slower rat?. The oxidation of selenite is an ahiotic process. The sediment from Katepwa Lake also reduced selenate, while Buffalo Pound Lake sediment did not. The reduction of seleriate is likely mcdititrd by biotic activity, :Lssociated biochemical processes, and/or organic matter.
